Harness, impact vest or buoyancy aid?
A harness is a control and comfort item: it takes the kite's pull through the spreader bar so your arms don't have to. It gives no protection in a fall. Assuming it does is a common beginner mistake.
An impact vest is padding. It softens hitting the water at speed and protects your ribs and back. Some float a little, but most aren't certified to, and brands are clear about it: Mystic's Star, Block and Solace pages all say "This is not a floatation device / buoyancy aid".
A buoyancy aid is certified to keep you afloat. For watersports that usually means ISO 12402-5 at 50 newtons. ION's Booster vests are both: 50N buoyancy aids with impact padding. Mystic's zip-free Star Floatation Vest is certified to EN ISO 12402-5 too, though Mystic doesn't give its newton figure.
Which you need depends on where you ride, and schools and clubs may have their own rules, so ask. If you ride alone, in cold water or far from the beach, flotation is worth having.

Do you need an impact vest as a beginner?
In most cases, yes. Beginners fall more often and less predictably than experienced riders, usually at moderate speed while learning body drags and water starts. A vest takes the sting out of those falls, and a buoyancy aid gives you real help if you're tired or winded mid-session, which is exactly when things go wrong.
Whatever you buy, check the fit before your first session:
- It should be snug enough not to ride up over your head in the water. Test it by floating on your back.
- Wear it with your harness on and lean back as if against a pull: the vest shouldn't push the harness up, or the harness drag the vest down. Cut matters here, like the ION Booster X's high cut or the Mystic Star's unpadded waist.
- Front zips are easier to get on and off on the beach; side zips and zip-free pull-overs can fit closer.
