What the certifications mean

ISO 12402-5 (50N) is the standard for buoyancy aids: a vest certified to it is designed to help keep you afloat. ION's Booster vests are 50N to ISO 12402-5, and Mystic's Star Floatation is certified to EN ISO 12402-5 (Mystic doesn't give its newton figure).

CE on an impact vest isn't a flotation rating. Mystic's Star, Block and Solace are CE marked, and Mystic states on each page that they're "not a floatation device / buoyancy aid". ION's Vector vests and Manera's React don't name a certification on their pages.

Neither kind is a lifejacket. If you want to know the difference between a vest and your harness, see impact vest vs harness.

Impact vest questions

What's the best impact vest for a beginner?
One that also floats. ION's Booster Vest 50N is certified to ISO 12402-5 and ION says its extra buoyancy is especially handy for beginners.
What size impact vest do I need?
Use the brand's own chart: ION sizes combine a number and a letter (48/S and so on), Mystic and Manera use letters. It should be snug enough not to ride up in the water.
Can I wear a buoyancy aid with a waist harness?
Yes, if it's cut for one. ION's Booster X sits above the harness with a loop over the hook, and Mystic's Star Floatation is designed to work with a harness.
Do I need a helmet too?
At rocky, shallow or crowded spots, and for big air, yes. Our helmet guide compares five watersports helmets, and the safety checklist covers the rest of the kit.
