Waist or seat harness?
A seat harness has leg loops and sits lower, around your hips and bum. Because the pull comes from lower down, it can't ride up towards your ribs, which some riders find a waist harness does when they're learning. Brands aim several of theirs squarely at newcomers: ION says the Echo is "designed for beginners", and its women's Vega is built for kiters "just starting out".
A waist harness sits around your lower back and leaves your hips free, which is why most riders move to one as they progress and start jumping. Many schools teach in waist harnesses too. If you can, try both during lessons before you buy: fit is personal, and a harness that rides up or digs in will spoil every session.
How we chose
We looked at every current kitesurf harness from the brands whose full ranges we could check: ION, Mystic and Prolimit. (Duotone, Slingshot, Airush and Cabrinha don't sell kite harnesses; Manera's range has no seat, women's or beginner models.) We kept a mix of seat and waist harnesses, including women's-specific ones, and gave extra weight to anything the brand itself pitches at beginners or all levels.
Specs and prices come from each brand's own page, and shop prices from the shop's page on the day we checked, all listed under Sources. No brand publishes harness weights, so there's no weight column. This is a spec comparison, not a fitting test: try a harness on before you commit.

Fit checks that matter more than brand
Try a harness on over the wetsuit you'll ride in, and do these checks before you buy:
- It should sit on your hips, below your ribs, with the hook roughly at or just below navel height.
- When it's tightened and you lean back as if against a pull, there should be no gap you can slide a flat hand into.
- The padding shouldn't bunch or fold when you sit back into a riding position. Try it on land against resistance.
- You should be able to find the spreader bar's hook and its release without looking, because you may need to in a hurry.
- Your harness doesn't protect you in a fall: that's what an impact vest is for. See impact vest vs harness.
