Waterproofing: check the actual depth rating and door seals
Most modern action cameras are waterproof to a meaningful depth without a housing, which is fine for kitesurfing impacts, but the failure point is almost always the charging port door or battery door seal after repeated salt exposure and sand grit, not the main housing.
- Rinse in fresh water after every session, doors closed, before opening them to dry — opening a salty, sandy door first is how grit gets into the seal.
- Check the door seal for sand or hair (yours or wetsuit lint) before every session — this is the single most common cause of 'waterproof' cameras failing.
Mount points that actually hold up
- Helmet mounts are the most secure for consistent footage but need a helmet you're already wearing for other safety reasons — don't buy a helmet just for the camera.
- Bar mounts give a distinctive POV but add windage and a small snag risk — check clearance against your lines before your first session with it mounted.
- Chest mounts on a harness or vest are a solid middle ground for stability without interfering with bar movement.
