What you need
- A foil: the mast, fuselage and wings. Starter sets like Slingshot's QuickStart and Duotone's aluminium sets come as one package.
- A foil board: smaller than a twin-tip, with mounts for the mast. Slingshot's Dwarf Craft is built for kite foiling; Airush's Foil Skate uses twin-tip construction and, Airush says, is easier to get going on if you're used to twin-tips.
- A kite that flies well in light wind: foiling needs far less wind, and the kite has to keep flying when you do. Duotone lists its Juice, Mono and Evo for kite foiling.
- Protection: a helmet and an impact vest matter more on a foil: see the safety checklist.
What the brands say a beginner needs
- A bigger front wing. Slingshot: "Larger wings deliver earlier lift and lower stall speed for easier starts and slower riding", and "the biggest size is perfect for your first flights and transitions". Duotone describes a wing "with a lot of lift for beginners".
- A wing made for kiting. Slingshot says its kite wings have minimal glide, so it's "very hard to outrun your kite".
- A shorter mast. Duotone: "Shorter mast lengths are offered to help beginners to get on the board fast and safe", and they're needed at shallow spots. Airush's advice for its learner set: "Ride the Carving Foil with a 60cm mast when learning."
- No race kit. Duotone warns that "a harder to ride racing setup could probably lead to frustration".
- A stable board, strapless at first. Slingshot's advice: "If you're learning, prioritize stability and repeatable takeoffs", and "Start simple, then add straps when you're ready."
Starter kit compared
Five current starter foils and boards on the brands' own specs. Duotone lists its sets by variant codes that read mast/fuselage–front wing/back wing (40/67-1250/250 is a 40 mast with the 1250 front wing). No brand here states wing areas with units, so there's no area column.
