Comparison table

Eight winter boots, gloves and hoods from O'Neill and C-Skins, the two brands whose winter accessories we found in stock at UK wetsuit shops. Thickness is written the way each brand writes it. UK prices are the brand's own UK list price; shop prices are in the cards.

How we chose

We looked at the winter boots, gloves and hoods from the brands whose suits are in our winter wetsuit guide, and kept the ones UK shops (Ann's Cottage and Wetsuit Centre) actually had in stock: two brands, O'Neill and C-Skins, eight products. Specs come from each brand's page and prices from the brand or the shop on the day we checked, all listed under Sources.

This is a spec comparison, not a cold-water test. Some brands publish very little: O'Neill's boot pages give only thickness and toe style, and C-Skins doesn't state the Wired+ hood's thickness, so those cells are dashes.

Boots, gloves and hood questions

What thickness boots do I need for kitesurfing in the UK in winter?
5 mm is a common choice for UK winter water. O'Neill's Hyperfreak Fire boot goes to 6/5/4 mm for the coldest spells.
Split toe or round toe?
Many riders like split toe for grip and control in straps, and round toe for easy on and off. C-Skins' Wired boot hides a split toe inside a round-toe outer for a bit of both.
Do I need a hood if my wetsuit doesn't have one?
For the coldest months, we'd say yes. A separate hood like the O'Neill Psycho 3mm or C-Skins Wired+ does the job, or buy a hooded suit (see our winter wetsuit guide).
Can I wear gloves on the kite bar?
Yes: most winter kiters do. Thinner gloves give more feel on the bar; thicker ones keep your hands warm for longer. Try your grip on land first.
