How we chose
We went through the twin-tip ranges of every brand whose site we could check and kept the freeride boards each brand pitches at newcomers, progression or comfort, in sizes that suit adults learning in UK wind. We left out stiff freestyle and park boards, which are harder work while you're learning.
Every spec and price comes from the brand's own page, listed under Sources. Where a brand doesn't publish something, like Slingshot's board widths, you'll see a dash. This is a spec comparison, not a riding test. If you can, borrow or rent a couple of sizes before you buy: board choice is far more forgiving than kite choice. Twin-tip vs directional explains why a twin-tip comes first.

Size, flex and what's in the box
Brands size twin-tips by rider weight, and a bigger board planes earlier, which makes the first weeks much easier. Duotone's charts are a good example: 70 to 85 kg on the 138 cm Select, under 60 kg on the 128 cm Soleil. Between sizes, go bigger.
Softer flex absorbs chop and heavy landings; stiff boards suit experienced freestyle riders. And budget for bindings if they're not included: open-toe pads and straps are the usual beginner choice, quick to get in and out of. The board also changes the kite you need: see our kite size calculator and beginner kites. In really light wind, a foil may suit you better than a bigger board: see kite foiling for beginners.
